    Introduction

    The importance of Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) to the workforce is well recognized. All leaders of any organization need to protect and promote the health and welfare of their workforce. The Graduate Certificate Programme (GCP) is aimed at develop professional knowledge in occupational health, safety and hygiene practice related to daily working environment. GCP is designed for those whose work brings them into contact with occupational health problems of workers and work-related hazards in hospitals and industrial settings such as construction sites. This programme will help students to discover how to integrate employees’ health and safety into daily operation and decisional making, save organization resources and contribute to enhance employees’ performance.

    This Graduate Certificate Programme (GCP) in Occupational Health, Safety, and Hygiene Practice is jointly organized by The Hong Kong College of Community & Public Health Nursing (HKCCPHN) and Hong Kong Association of Occupational Health Nurses (HKAOHN). The program consists of three modules and can be completed over approximately 9 months. GCP provides well-structured occupational health and safety training program with Site Visits, assignments and Examinations. Upon completion of the programme, students should:

    • Understand key concepts of occupational health and occupational diseases.
    • Apply basics knowledge of different hazards such as physical, chemical, ergonomic, biological and mental health hazards in workplace.
    • Develop and evaluate workplace occupational health promotion programs.
    • Enhance their personal and professional development in occupational health, safety & hygiene practice.
    • Students who complete and pass either Module I, II, or III will receive an individual certificate. Those who complete and pass all three modules assessment plus an occupational health & safety project, a full GCP will be awarded the “Graduate Certificate Programme in Occupational Health, Safety, and Hygiene Practice”.
    • Upon completion of the programmes, graduates with relevant working experience are eligible to apply for Life Membership of Hong Kong Association of Occupational Health Nurses (HKAOHN).
    • Graduates can apply for 46.5 CNE points or equivalent under Continuing Nursing Education system of The Nursing Council of Hong Kong, and the programme is considered structured specialty training consistent with the core competency of Fellow of The Hong Kong Academy of Nursing & Midwifery (Community & Public Health-Occupational Health).
    • In addition, it is also useful for all safety officers and managers who are interested in furthering study in occupational hygiene and health practices in the operation of their enterprises.
    • GCP consists of 3 modules:
      • Module I: Occupational Safety (16 contact hours + 3 hour Site Visit + 1 hour MCQ examination after 30 self-study hours)
      • Module II: Occupational Hygiene (16 contact hours + 3 hours Site Visit + 1 hour MCQ examination after 30 self-study hours)
      • Module III: Occupational Health Practice (16 contact hours + 3 hours Site Visit + 1 hour MCQ examination after 30 self-study hours)
    • A separate certificate will be issued for each completed module.
    • If completing all the 3 modules plus an occupational health & safety project, a full GCP will be awarded (Details of Project Module will be announced later).

    Students must meet 80% attendance for lectures, 100% attendance for site visits, and pass three MCQ examinations. A separate certificate will be issued for each completed module.

    • Tuition (Module I only) is HK$4,000 (HKAOHN member); HK$4,250 (Non-HKAOHN member)
    • Tuition (Module II only) is HK$4,000 (HKAOHN member); HK$4,250 (Non-HKAOHN member)
    • Tuition (Module III only) is HK$4,000 (HKAOHN member); HK$4,250 (Non-HKAOHN member)
    • Tuition (Module I + II + III) is HK$10,800 (HKAOHN member); HK$12,000 (Non-HKAOHN member)

    * Fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferable, but the programme fee will be returned if the course is oversubscribed.

    • A practicing registered nurse with at least one year of current active nursing experience who has responsibilities to implement occupational health and safety in an organization, or has interest in expanding their knowledge of occupational health nursing.
    • Allied health professionals with a personal interest in developing a career pathway in Occupational Health, Safety, and Hygiene practices.
    • Occupational Safety & Health practitioners, Register Safety Officers or supervisors who have personal interest in obtaining further study opportunities in occupational health and hygiene.

    Applicants are normally required to meet either one of the following requirement:

    • Hold a Bachelor degree preferably in Health Science awarded by a local university or an overseas university of acceptable standing.
    • Obtained a degree from a university in which English is the medium of instruction of degree programmes or equivalent qualifications.

    Courses will be taught by Occupational Health fellows of The Hong Kong College of Community & Primary Health Nursing (HKCCPHN) and Executive Committee (including Honorary Advisors) from HKAOHN who are highly qualified and well experienced in all the major aspects of the programme.

    To meet the multi-disciplinary demands of the curriculum, HKAOHN also invites registered specialist in occupational medicine, registered safety professionals and other experienced experts to be guest speakers of these courses.
